TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, responded to a summons from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
He was questioned in relation to alleged corruption in the procurement of Google Cloud services at the Ministry during his tenure.
Nadiem arrived at the KPK’s Red and White Building in South Jakarta at 09:18 a.m. local time. He wore a long-sleeved yellow shirt and carried a black bag on his right arm.
He was accompanied by his lawyer, Hotman Paris Hutapea, who told reporters that Nadiem would not give any statements before the examination was completed. “No statement this morning,” Hotman said.
According to KPK Deputy for Law Enforcement and Execution, Asep Guntur Rahayu, the commission had sent Nadiem an official letter requesting clarification. Asep explained that Nadiem, as the top official at the ministry, had made the decision to procure Google Cloud services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The top leadership decided on the procurement, including for Google Cloud,” Asep said on July 31, 2025.
Before questioning Nadiem, KPK had already examined several of his former subordinates, including his former special staff member Fiona Handayani, who was questioned on July 30.
“We are requesting information from the top leadership, in this case, Mr. NM [Nadiem Makarim], about the Google Cloud procurement,” Asep said.
Currently, two separate corruption cases at the Ministry of Education are under investigation by two different legal bodies. The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the Chromebook procurement, while the KPK is focusing on the procurement of Google Cloud.
Asep noted that the Google Cloud bribery case is linked to the period of remote learning during the pandemic. Students submitted assignments online, which were stored using the cloud services procured by the ministry.
“These were stored in the cloud, and we had to pay for that. That’s what we’re now investigating,” he said on July 25.
Asep added that although the Chromebook and Google Cloud cases are related, they are considered separate matters. Chromebooks involve hardware, while Google Cloud relates to software procurement.
He also revealed that the KPK is looking into allegations surrounding free internet provision during the same period.
“We have also been coordinating with the Attorney General’s Office, as these are distinct cases,” Asep said.
