TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, targets to complete the construction of the Red and White Fisherfolk Village in Papua this month. "We want this to run well so that fishermen can increase their income several times over, like in Biak, Papua, so that the exchange value also increases," said Sakti in a written statement on Friday, January 2, 2025.
Sakti made the statement while observing the construction of the fisherfolk village in Poncosari Village, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta. This activity is part of Sakti's working visit to several fisherfolk village construction sites in Java. According to Sakti, the average progress of the construction in Java has exceeded 90 percent.
The fisheries facilities prepared by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for the Poncosari fisherfolk village consist of building infrastructure, cold chain facilities, and fishing equipment.
The building infrastructure consists of managers' offices, supply kiosks, cold storage warehouses, ice factory buildings, coolbox shelters, fishermen's workshops, fishermen's halls, culinary centers, and repair shelters. Meanwhile, the cold chain facilities include portable cold storage machines, portable ice factories, refrigerated trucks, and dozens of coolboxes.
Furthermore, the fishing equipment includes 10 vessels over 5 GT, 100 vessel engines, and hundreds of environmentally friendly fishing gear.
The Chair of the Red and White Fisherfolk Village Development Implementation Coordination Team, Trian Yunanda, said that the first phase of construction in 2025 has been completed out of a total of 65 locations. One of them is in Toli-Toli Regency, South Sulawesi.
Meanwhile, Trian said that the majority will be completed gradually with a target by the end of January 2026.
As for the completion in flood and landslide-affected areas, it is targeted to be completed no later than February 2026. The areas that have been granted an extension for construction are Langsa, Bireun, North Aceh, and Padang Pariaman. "However, we continue to communicate with the contractors, local governments, and hopefully it can also be completed in January," said Trian.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has allocated a budget of Rp1.34 trillion to build 65 fisherfolk villages in Indonesia.
