TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali is optimistic that hotel occupancy rates across the "Island of the Gods" will reach 90 to 95 percent during the Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 holiday season. This target aligns with a visible surge in tourist arrivals leading up to the year-end celebrations.
I Gusti Agung Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya, Vice Chairman of PHRI Bali, noted that current occupancy rates hover between 75 and 80 percent. He expects these figures to climb steadily over the coming days, peaking on New Year’s Eve.
"Occupancy is currently at 75 to 80 percent, but the trend is upward. We anticipate reaching 90 to 95 percent by New Year’s, which follows the historical pattern for this holiday period," Rai stated on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
Rai explained that while high-end starred hotels saw a slight dip in occupancy to 60–65 percent from November through mid-December, this does not indicate a decline in overall tourist numbers. Instead, it reflects a shift in traveler demographics.
"It's not low, just a slight decrease. Many international tourists currently arriving are from the middle-to-lower market segments," he said.
These travelers often prefer more affordable options such as guest houses, villas, apartments, and homestays. Rai views this as a positive development for the local economy, as many of these properties are locally owned, ensuring a more equitable distribution of tourism revenue.
The PHRI also noted that an increase in Bali’s total room inventory—up nearly 10 percent this year—can make occupancy rates appear lower even as total visitor numbers rise. "The idea that tourist visits have decreased is incorrect. In 2024, foreign arrivals were around 6.3 million. For 2025, we are on track to reach 7 million, an increase of approximately 11 percent," Rai clarified.
However, the association reported a slight decline in domestic tourism. The target of 10.5 million domestic visitors is expected to fall short by about 10 percent compared to previous trends.
While main tourist hubs maintain stable and high occupancy, regions such as Karangasem, North Bali, and West Bali continue to face challenges. Rai emphasized that addressing this requires more balanced infrastructure development and targeted promotion.
"Moving into 2026, our goal is to ensure that Bali’s tourism growth is more evenly distributed across the entire island," he concluded.
