TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, PT PLN (Persero), has completed the entire process of restoring the electrical system affected by floods and landslides in North Sumatra. The Sorkam District in Tapanuli Tengah Regency became the last area to receive electricity supply again on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that all networks damaged by the disaster since November 25 had been fully restored. "Based on the direction of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, all personnel worked tirelessly to reach the most difficult areas to restore electricity supply to all affected points. The support from local governments, TNI/Polri, and the community greatly strengthened us in the field," he said in a written statement on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
General Manager of PLN's North Sumatra Distribution Main Unit Mundhakir stated that the restoration process prioritized safety, speed, and accuracy. A total of 949 personnel were deployed to locations, some of which could only be reached by walking while carrying heavy materials through steep cliffs, muddy paths, and isolated areas.
He added that all 103 substations which were previously affected are now operational again. Customers who were previously cut off from accessing electricity will gradually receive electricity. "The completion of this restoration is not only a technical success but also proof that collaboration from various parties can penetrate the most difficult terrains," he said.
In addition to North Sumatra, PLN previously stated that the electrical system in flood-affected areas in West Sumatra had been restored as of Friday, December 5, 2025. To normalize the network, PLN rebuilt the affected infrastructure. A total of 619 medium-voltage and low-voltage network poles and 30.95 kilometers of electric cable circuits were replaced and installed.
Of the three provinces affected by the floods, only the electricity system in Aceh has not been fully restored. PLN is still repairing a number of infrastructures in several areas such as Central Aceh, Aceh Besar, Aceh Tamiang, and Bireun.
Previously, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia stated that electricity in Aceh could be fully restored at the latest by Saturday, December 6. However, based on the latest update, he stated that the electrical system in that area is only at 97 percent.
According to PLN data, a total of 12 transmission towers of SUTT 150 kV were damaged in the Bireuen-Arun, Brandan-Langsa, and Peusangan-Bireuen routes. Due to this damage, electricity supply was disrupted in more than 10 regencies/cities, including Banda Aceh, Lhokseumawe, East Aceh, Aceh Tamiang, North Aceh, and South Aceh.
