TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said there are 2,900 drug villages in Indonesia. Ninety of them have been declared drug-free after being monitored by the Indonesian National Police (Polri).
"Gradually, there are already 90 villages that we have specifically worked on," Listyo said after a coordination meeting with the anti-drug unit at the National Police Headquarters building on Thursday, Dec. 5. He did not specify which villages he was referring to.
The program to change the predicate of villages is being carried out by the Indonesian National Police in cooperation with the anti-drug unit formed by President Prabowo Subianto. Listyo is the head of the unit, while the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Budi Gunawan is the director. The unit involves 26 ministries and agencies.
Sigit said that efforts to free villages from the drug cycle are crucial in the fight against drugs. Methods include outreach programs, education, the inclusion of drug-related curricula in schools, and law enforcement in the field.
In addition, the role of all stakeholders which include local governments, community leaders, religious figures, and government ministries, is needed to transform these villages.
In the police institution, he said that they have organized competitions divided into several regions. Members or units that successfully transform their areas, known as drug villages, into drug-free zones are rewarded.
Budi Gunawan emphasized that the key to ridding villages of drug trafficking was community participation. "Empowering the community to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and their impact on future generations is essential," he said.
Budi explained that when implementing the Drug-Free Village program, one of the key aspects to watch out for is the relocation of drug activities. In addition to this program, other efforts are being made to disrupt their supply chains.
