TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto appreciated the Indonesian national football team's 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
"Thank you, outstanding national team!" said the retired TNI General at the Galeao Air Force Military Base, Brazil, after attending the G20 Summit, as quoted from Prabowo's media team statement on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
The Garuda team achieved a crucial victory against Saudi Arabia thanks to two goals scored by Marselino Ferdinan in the 32nd and 57th minutes. This victory against Saudi Arabia made Indonesia earn six points from six matches in the Asia zone third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. Shin Tae Yong's team occupies the third position in the temporary standings of Group C.
The six points obtained by the Garuda squad made Indonesia the most successful Southeast Asian country in the third round of the Asia zone of the World Cup Qualifiers, surpassing Vietnam and Thailand.
Next, the Indonesian national team is scheduled to play the remaining matches of Group C in the third round of the Asia zone of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Australia (March 20, 2025), Bahrain (March 25, 2025), China (June 5, 2025), and Japan (June 10, 2025).
During the G20 Summit in Brazil, Prabowo himself did not miss the opportunity to support the Indonesian national team. He took the time to watch the Indonesia vs. Saudi Arabia 2026 World Cup Qualifier match.
Prabowo enjoyed the match on his phone in the car. This was evident from his personal Instagram account @prabowo. At 10:00 PM (WIB), the account uploaded a moment of Prabowo dressed in a formal gray suit, blue tie, and complete with his black peci (traditional hat), sitting in the car while holding a mobile phone in his left hand.
The head of state was seen smiling and clenched his right fist after Indonesia managed to score against Saudi Arabia. "Go Garuda. Let's go, Indonesia," wrote Prabowo in the photo caption.
