TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting with France's President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brazil on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, local time, to explore the opportunities to enhance economic cooperation.
"At the heart of our discussions in Rio de Janeiro: the strategic partnership between Indonesia and France, the security of the Indo-Pacific region, and our efforts for climate and biodiversity," President Macron said as quoted on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, who accompanied Prabowo in the meeting with Macron, stated that the two leaders discussed various topics, including the Indonesia-France Business Forum to the procurement of fighter jets and submarines.
In the discussion, Airlangga claimed that Macron appreciated Indonesia's plan to procure military equipment, including Rafale fighter aircraft and submarine manufacturing cooperation. The Golkar Party chair declined to provide further details.
"Of course, we discussed the economy with France, since we have the bilateral Indonesia-France Business Forum,” he said, as quoted from Antara. “The weapon systems procurement is under the Minister of Defense, so it’s a future program.”
Indonesia and France are collaborating in the construction of high-tech Scorpène Evolved submarines to strengthen Indonesia's maritime industry self-reliance. In Indonesia, this cooperation involves human resources from PT PAL Indonesia, which has received technology transfers from France to produce submarines domestically.
The Indonesian Ministry of Defense has completed the purchase of 42 Rafale fighter jets from French Dassault Aviation, the latest contract covered the purchase of 18 units.
Indonesia has also completed the first and second procurement contracts in 2022 and 2023, each for six and 18 units. The first Rafale aircraft is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia in early 2026.
