TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto targets Indonesia to be able to produce its own food needs or food self-sufficiency, within a period of 4 to 5 years.

"I have proclaimed that Indonesia must achieve food self-sufficiency as soon as possible," Prabowo said in his inaugural speech at the inauguration of the president and vice president for the 2024-2029 period at the DPR/MPR Complex, Sunday, October 20, 2024.

According to him, self-sufficiency is important considering the uncertain global political situation. Indonesia cannot continue to rely on other countries to meet domestic food needs. There must be independent food resilience owned by Indonesia.

"There is no other way, in the shortest possible time, we must achieve food resilience," said the eighth President of Indonesia.

He predicts that Indonesia can achieve food self-sufficiency within a period of 4 to 5 years. Prabowo said that he obtained this prediction after discussing with several economists. He even believes that Indonesia can become the world's food barn.

Repeatedly Mentioned

Food self-sufficiency is one of the main programs that Prabowo has repeatedly mentioned on various occasions, especially during the campaign period. Prabowo even outlined several strategies to achieve this, including the establishment of food estates especially for rice, corn, and cassava. Prabowo also targets an increase in harvested land area up to 4 hectares by 2029.

Currently, Indonesia itself is one of the world's largest food importers. This is reflected in Indonesia's low food security index, which was at 63 out of 113 countries in 2023.

In 2024, Indonesia's rice imports recorded the highest since 1999. During the inflation control meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday, July 29, 2024, Perum Bulog stated that it had imported 2.5 million tons of rice throughout the first semester of 2024. The planned rice imports for the period from May to December are targeted at 3.40 million tons.
