TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli embassy staff in Greece have been evacuated from their homes in Athens. This decision follows protests and escalating anger over the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
A senior Israeli security official confirmed the evacuation to Israel Hayom, as quoted by Quds on Wednesday. The official cited the "situation in Greece" as the reason.
Neither Israeli nor Greek authorities have issued an official statement regarding the status of embassy staff as reported by Anadolu.
Public anger is mounting, and Greek citizens are calling for an end to the Israeli genocide against the Palestinian people.
A large protest movement, March to Gaza, declared August 10, 2025, as a national day of action. Demonstrations will take place on Greek islands and popular tourist destinations.
In a statement, March to Gaza said: "The Greek people will not remain silent in the face of the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza with the support and complicity of the West and the Greek government."
The movement urges citizens to transform islands, beaches, mountain peaks, and sanctuaries into spaces of solidarity.
The statement also condemns efforts to make Greece a haven for those who support or participate in the massacre in Palestine.
Israeli Ambassador Clashes with Athens Mayor
Tensions escalated after the Israeli ambassador to Greece, Noam Katz, attacked Athens Mayor Haris Doukas. Katz accused the mayor of not doing enough to protect the city from peaceful protesters, whom he referred to as an "organized minority." He also claimed that Doukas made Israeli tourists feel unsafe.
Mayor Doukas responded sharply on social media: "We do not accept lessons in democracy from those who kill civilians and children in food lines."
He added that Athens has always opposed violence and racism.
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) also condemned the statement of Israeli Ambassador Noam Katz, who expressed concern over pro-Palestinian graffiti in Athens.
"The audacity of the Israeli Ambassador in Athens for his vile statements stems not only from the fact that he represents a murderous state, but also from the fact that the Greek government has evolved into a key advocate for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people, under the pretext of a strategic alliance with it," the party said in a statement.
Anti-Genocide Protests Erupt
For weeks, anti-genocide protests have spread across Greek islands. In Syros, protesters blocked the Israeli cruise ship, Crown Iris, from docking. Several protests have also been reported across the country.
The Israeli military, which has rejected international calls for a ceasefire, has launched a brutal assault in Gaza since October 7, 2023, killing over 61,000 Palestinian residents, nearly half of whom are women and children.
Israel's military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the brink of starvation.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the enclave.
