TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine early on the morning of December 6, just hours before Ukrainian and United States officials began the third day of peace talks. According to CBS News, the attack involved 653 drones and 51 missiles, triggering air sirens across nearly all of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported successfully shooting down 585 drones and 30 missiles, but 29 locations were still hit. At least eight people were injured, including three in the Kyiv area, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. Drone activity was also reported in the western Ukrainian region of Lviv.
Energy Becomes the Main Target
The national energy operator, Ukrenergo, stated on Telegram that Russia launched a major attack with missiles and drones on power plants and energy infrastructure in several areas.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost all external power supply during the night of the attack. Despite not being operational, the facility still needed stable power to cool six shut-down reactors and spent fuel, to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident.
As reported by Euronews, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that energy facilities were the main targets of the attack. He also mentioned that a railway station in Fastiv, Kyiv region, was burned down due to drone attacks. Zelenskyy wrote, "There have also been strikes on industrial facilities and residential buildings in the Kyiv region." The attacks also affected the regions of Dnipro, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Lviv, Volyn, and Mykolaiv.
Attacks in Russian Territory
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that its air defense shot down 116 Ukrainian drones in Russian territory on the same night. The Russian Telegram channel Astra reported that Ukraine had hit the Ryazan oil refinery.
Governor Pavel Malkov stated that a residential building was damaged and drone fragments fell on industrial facilities, but did not specify the refinery. Ukraine later increased attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, which is considered a source of funding for the invasion of Ukraine.
This wave of attacks coincided with the third day of peace talks between Ukrainian and American officials. It is said that Washington will continue to act as a mediator of communication between Kyiv and Moscow. However, Ukraine and its European allies remain skeptical of Moscow's seriousness. They believe that President Vladimir Putin is only showing fake interest after last week's meeting with the U.S. did not yield significant progress.
