Seoul Summer Travel Guide: Tips for a Smooth Vacation

6 hours ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seoul, South Korea, is currently hit by a heatwave. The air temperature reached 37.7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. The local meteorological agency recorded it as the hottest day in July.

The increase in air temperature is expected to persist soon. Novi Nursyahbani, the Public Relations Officer of the Korea Tourism Organization Jakarta Office, reminded Indonesian tourists who will visit Korea shortly to take care of their health. "Always carry a water bottle wherever you go and use sunscreen for optimal protection," she said to Tempo via a text message on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Here are some other tips for travelers when exploring the city of Seoul, as reported by the Korea Times.

1. Wear lightweight clothing

The clothing worn during summer in scorching Seoul has a significant impact. Choose sweat-absorbing fabric. Choose clothing that is specially designed for summer. It should be quick-drying and able to block sunlight.

2. Bring a portable fan

Locals often carry portable fans everywhere. Tourists can also bring a mini fan. Some convenience stores sell them. However, be cautious when the temperature rises above 35 degrees Celsius. Using a fan in extreme heat can expedite sweat evaporation, which may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke.

3. Stay hydrated

Maintaining hydration during summer is crucial. In addition to consuming plenty of water, you can also take in electrolyte drinks and others that can help you stay cool.

4. Bring cooling wet wipes

These wet wipes are designed to cool your skin. They are usually available in general stores or skincare brands. They cost around 1,000 won. In addition to wet wipes, there are cooling sheets - adhesive plaster with cooling gel. Initially designed to reduce children's fever, during the peak of summer, many adults apply them to their foreheads or necks to instantly relieve heat.

5. Eat cold food

There are foods commonly consumed by Koreans during summer. Tourists can also try them while in Seoul. Starting from naengmyeon, chewy cold noodles in cold beef broth, kongguksu is noodles in cold creamy soybean broth, and bingsu is a dessert of shaved ice with milk and sweet toppings such as fruits or red beans. These cold noodles are easy to find in Korean restaurants, and bingsu is available in most cafes, both local and renowned chain restaurants.

6. Visit air-conditioned malls

If you want to avoid the scorching sun, head indoors to places like shopping centers. In addition to Seoul, there are also several attractive options located near major tourist attractions. For example, Lotte and Shinsegae Department Store in Myeong-dong, AK Plaza in Hongdae, Anyoung Insadong in Insa-dong, Coex Mall in Gangnam, and I'Park Mall in Yongsan.
