TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team successfully secured their first victory in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Asian zone after defeating Saudi Arabia with a score of 2-0. In the match at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, coach Shin Tae-yong was seen changing the formation from 3-4-3 against Japan to 3-5-2 when facing Saudi Arabia.
"Because the Saudi Arabian opponent had a good high pressing, we changed the formation to 3-5-2 from 3-4-3. The three midfielders played very well, it can be said perfectly," he said in a press conference after the match.
Shin Tae-yong praised Marselino Ferdinan who played as an attacking midfielder and managed to score two goals in that evening's match. The South Korean coach assessed that overall, the midfielders had implemented his instructions.
"So we won and it seems we can achieve the Indonesian national team's target to finish in third or fourth position because there are still two more home matches, so it's quite achievable. The players must feel that we can meet the target," said the coach affectionately known as STY.
Throughout the match, according to Shin Tae-yong, the Garuda squad applied tactics that had been trained for three days before facing The Green Falcons. STY's tactics and strategy were based on the analysis of Saudi Arabia's game when facing Australia in the previous match. The implementation of tactics went well.
"Indeed, there were good opportunities in the beginning, should have made it easier to score more goals than the result. However, I still want to express my gratitude to the players and supporters for this outcome," he said.
After winning the match against Saudi Arabia, the Indonesian national team is in third place in the temporary standings of Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with six points. This result is identical to Saudi Arabia's tally, which occupies fourth place.
Meanwhile, the top of Group C standings is still held by Japan with 16 points after defeating China. Besides Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, Australia in second place and China in fifth place also have six points. Bahrain remains in last place with five points. Next, the Indonesian national team will face Australia on March 20, 2025, and host Bahrain on March 25, 2025.
