TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Africa officially becomes the first country from the African continent to chair the G20, after receiving the leadership position of the group from Brazil at the G20 High-Level Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Tuesday.
"It is an honor, on behalf of the people of South Africa, to take on the responsibility of the G20 Chairmanship for next year," said President Cyril Ramaphosa after receiving the G20 Presidency from the host of the G20 2024 Summit, Brazil.
Ramaphosa stated that South Africa will focus on advancing sustainable development and inclusive economic growth, as well as on strengthening and promoting the world's common goals, namely the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations' 'Compact for Future'.
The theme of South Africa's G20 Presidency, which commences on December 1, will center on 'Solidarity, equality, and sustainability,' he stated.
"In Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine, we must continue to advocate for those suffering from difficulties and hardships," stated Ramaphosa.
He added that the G20 must also support the countries most vulnerable to potential pandemics and public health emergencies.
The South African President mentioned that they will combat inequalities that threaten the progress and economic stability of the world. He also pledged to promote the priority development agendas of African and Global South countries within the G20.
South Africa is the only G20 member country from the African continent before the regional African organization, the African Union, officially becomes a permanent member of the group at the G20 2023 Summit in New Delhi, India.
