TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korea and Malaysia on Monday, November 25, 2024, signed a cooperation agreement to supply minerals from Malaysia. Not only that, the two countries also cooperate in the defense industry sector, where Seoul offers Malaysia a project to replace some of its fighter jets after supplying a contract for 18 fighter jets in 2023 worth USD920 million (Rp14 trillion).
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in their second meeting committed to realizing a free trade agreement next year, including in the service, investment, and green energy sectors. The South Korean Presidential Office explained that Yoon and Anwar agreed to establish a foundation focusing on climate change cooperation, including signing an MoU on carbon capture and storage projects scheduled to be launched in 2029.
Yoon and Anwar also exchanged views on the strengthening of military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the Hezbollah-Israel conflict in the Middle East.
Previously in February 2023, Malaysia purchased 18 fighter jets from South Korea worth 1.2 trillion won or about Rp14 trillion. South Korean aerospace manufacturer, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), signed an agreement with the Malaysian Ministry of Defense. The first shipment of the single-engine light fighter aircraft will commence in 2026.
At the request of Malaysia, KAI will modify the model by adding in-flight refueling systems and expanding its weapon capacity. For KAI, this is the fourth fighter jet acquisition contract with a Southeast Asian country, after Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. KAI has sold 68 trainer aircraft units as well as T-50 KT-1 and FA-50 fighter aircraft to Southeast Asia.
