TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Every year, when Munir Said Thalib’s birthday arrives on December 8, Suciwati marks it with prayer. Munir’s widow hopes there is a small light at the end of the tunnel in efforts to uncover the truth behind her husband’s murder.
Munir died from poisoning on a flight to the Netherlands in September 2004. The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is currently reinvestigating his death to determine whether it constitutes a gross human rights violation.
For Suciwati, that designation is crucial. She wants the case handled seriously so the intellectual authors of Munir’s killing are exposed. After 21 years of seeking justice, she said she repeatedly hit a wall. “There are efforts to bury this murder case,” she said in a video conference interview with Tempo reporter Hussein Abri Dongoran on Friday, December 19, 2025.
Komnas HAM is reinvestigating Munir Said Thalib’s death. Are you optimistic there will be progress?
There is nothing new. The process also moves far too slowly. At first I thought it would be faster, but it turns out to take a very long time. Still, the fact that, after 21 years, Munir’s death remains alive and continues to draw public attention, that is extraordinary.
You were questioned by Komnas HAM. What did you explain?
I was asked about phone calls from Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto, the Garuda Indonesia pilot, as well as Munir’s meetings with several people. There were also questions about accusations that Munir carried state documents, which is a lie. I was the one who prepared Munir’s belongings before he left for the Netherlands.
