TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Data, Information, and Communications Center for Disaster Management of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari, stated that the number of casualties from flash floods and landslides in three provinces of Sumatra has increased. Based on data as of Thursday, December 25, 2025, the total death toll from the Sumatra disaster has reached 1,135 people.
This number has increased by six deaths from the previous day's tally of 1,129 people. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in Aceh Province, with a total of 503 people.
Meanwhile, in North Sumatra Province, there were 371 fatalities, and in West Sumatra Province, approximately 261 people perished. BNPB also noted that 173 people are still declared missing.
"The joint team of Basarnas, TNI (military), Polri (police), and volunteers continues their search and rescue operations," said Abdul during a press conference at the BNPB headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
Abdul mentioned that hundreds of thousands of people are still in evacuation posts spread across 52 regencies or cities in the three provinces. "The current number of evacuees is 489,864 people," he said.
The flash floods and landslides that hit Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra at the end of last November also resulted in thousands of affected infrastructures. BNPB recorded that more than 157,000 houses suffered damage.
Additionally, 1,900 public facilities in the three provinces experienced damage. Hundreds of healthcare and educational facilities, places of worship, office buildings, and bridges have reportedly been damaged.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto stated that the government would soon build temporary and permanent housing for the victims affected by the Sumatra disaster. He claimed that the government has allocated a budget and made preparations for the construction of these residences.
Furthermore, Prabowo plans to establish a task force for the rehabilitation and reconstruction after the Sumatra disaster. He claimed that the disaster management situation is still under control. "We have deployed resources for handling. This involves three provinces out of a total of 38, so the situation is under control. I am monitoring it closely," he said.
