TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced the upcoming supermoon on November 16, 2024, has the potential to increase maximum sea levels, triggering tidal flooding in coastal areas.

The agency's Director of Maritime Meteorology, Eko Prasetyo, mentioned that based on water level data monitoring and tidal predictions, tidal flooding is likely to occur in several coastal regions of Indonesia.

These regions include the coasts of Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, the north coast of Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and Papua.

Potential coastal flooding can generally impact community activities around ports and coastal areas. This includes cargo handling at ports, activities in coastal settlements, salt ponds, and inland fishing activities.

“The community is advised to remain vigilant and prepared for the potential impacts of high tides,” Eko said in a press release on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

Eko further urged the public to stay informed by following updates on maritime weather information from BMKG through the call center 021-6546315/18, 196, http://maritim.bmkg.go.id, Twitter and Instagram @BMKGmaritim, or nearest BMKG office.
