TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, according to the island’s meteorological agency, with no immediate reports of major damage.
The quake occurred at 5:47 PM local time at a depth of 11.9 kilometers. As reported by Taiwan’s Central News Agency, the tremor was felt across the island and shook buildings in the capital, Taipei.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) separately measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.0.
Taiwan’s National Fire Agency said there had been no reports of damage to transportation networks, including roads and railways.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, said the quake did not meet the threshold requiring factory evacuations at its facilities across the island.
The Central Weather Administration issued alerts for several major cities, including Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan. The strongest shaking was recorded at intensity level four on Taiwan’s seven-point seismic scale in parts of Hualien and Pingtung.
Local television footage showed items falling from supermarket shelves and breaking in Taitung, although no injuries were reported.
Taiwan sits near the boundary of two tectonic plates and frequently experiences earthquakes. In 2016, an earthquake in southern Taiwan killed more than 100 people, while a magnitude-7.3 quake in 1999 left more than 2,000 people dead.
