TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an "immediate ceasefire" on Saturday, December 27, 2025, ending weeks of intense clashes along the shared border of both countries. As a result of the renewed fighting, over 100 people have been killed and half a million civilians in both countries have been displaced.
"Both sides agree to maintain current troop deployments without further movement," said the defense ministers of Thailand and Cambodia in a joint statement on Saturday, December 26, 2025.
The ceasefire was scheduled to come into effect at 12:00 p.m. local time. The agreement, signed by Thailand's Defense Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and his Cambodian counterpart Tea Seiha, ends a 20-day battle, the worst between the two neighboring countries in Southeast Asia in recent years.
A day before the ceasefire was agreed upon, the Cambodian government accused the Thai military of escalating attacks in the disputed border areas, despite the two countries having held the first round of military talks to ease tensions. According to a report by TRT World, citing Cambodia's government media Agence Kampuchea Presse, the accusation was made on Friday, December 26.
In a press conference in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's National Defense Ministry spokesperson, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, said that the Thai military operation began early in the morning with heavy artillery fire. The targets of the attack, he said, included several sensitive locations, including the Preah Vihear Temple in the Preah Vihear Province, as well as the Ta Krabey and Ta Mone Temples in the Oddar Meanchey Province.
Artillery, Fighter Jets, and Drones
According to a report by Agence Kampuchea Presse cited by Anadolu, Maly Socheata stated that Thai forces launched intensive artillery shellings and fighter jet operations in the early hours. Dozens of artillery shells were fired into Chouk Chey Village. The attack, he said, was followed by further gunfire and drone bombings targeting Chouk Chey and Prey Chan.
Maly Socheata also accused Thailand of deploying F-16 fighter jets to carry out aerial bombings by dropping up to 40 bombs in the Chouk Chey area. Cambodian media, Khmer Times, uploaded a video claiming that the Thai military deployed infantry, tanks, and armored vehicles to Chouk Chey after the heavy airstrikes.
No Response from Thailand Yet
As of Friday, there has been no official confirmation or response from the Thai government to Cambodia's statements and media reports. But a day earlier, the Thai military announced the discovery of four additional landmines near the location where a Thai soldier was injured in the Surin Province.
In a statement by the Royal Thai Army uploaded on Platform X, it was mentioned, "These mines were laid consecutively along the route used by the troops and were located only about 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) from the original explosion site."
This development comes after Thailand and Cambodia held their first military talks on Wednesday in the Chanthaburi Province, Thailand. The meeting, which lasted less than an hour, marked the first contact between the military officials of the two countries since the renewed clashes erupted on December 8, a day after two Thai soldiers were injured in a border incident.
