TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tens of thousands of Hungarian citizens rallied in Budapest to urge Prime Minister (PM) Viktor Orban to resign. As reported by RFERL on Saturday, the rally occurred as the rising opposition leader Tisza vowed to end Orban's 15-year rule.
Meanwhile, Orban escalated his campaign rhetoric in a separate speech on March 15. He threatened to take action against politicians and journalists whom he claimed received foreign funding. He also once again rejected Ukraine's membership in the European Union.
Hungary is scheduled to hold a general election next year, and polls indicate that the Tisza party, led by former Orban ally Peter Magyar, is gaining ground. This is partly due to the country's weakening economy.
As over 50,000 Tisza supporters and others gathered in the cold weather in Budapest, Magyar promised to release a popular survey on 12 key economic and political issues to listen to the "voice of the nation."
"Those who deceive their own nation must end up in the dustbin of history," Magyar told the crowd. "The time has come."
Earlier that day, at a public meeting to mark the national day, Orban vowed to eliminate what he called the "shadow army" of non-governmental organizations, journalists, and politicians he claimed were paid from the United States and Brussels.
His comments echoed earlier remarks where Orban targeted NGOs and media outlets that he alleged received funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and billionaire George Soros.
"After today's celebration, a great Easter cleansing is coming because the insects have survived the winter," Orban said. "We will eliminate the entire shadow army."
Orban's Fidesz party has proposed constitutional changes that would allow the expulsion of dual citizens deemed a threat to Hungary's sovereignty.
