TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone on Monday, November 24, covering issues ranging from trade and Taiwan to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The call came a month after their meeting in Busan, South Korea, signaling continued high-level engagement between the world’s two largest economies, Al Jazeera reported.

Following the conversation, Trump described the U.S.-China relationship as “extremely strong” and characterized the morning call as “very good.”

He noted that discussions included the Ukraine conflict, agricultural trade, and fentanyl, and confirmed that both leaders extended invitations for state visits.

Trump also said he accepted an invitation to visit China in April, adding, “We agreed that it is important that we communicate often, which I look forward to doing.

While Trump’s statement did not mention Taiwan, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Xi stressed that Taiwan should be returned to China, framing it as part of the post-World War II international order established through U.S.-China collaboration against fascism and militarism.

China added that Trump acknowledged the significance of Taiwan to Beijing. Tensions have recently escalated after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested that Japan could intervene militarily if Taiwan were attacked.

On Ukraine, Xi reiterated China’s neutral position and expressed support for efforts to achieve peace, emphasizing the need to resolve the crisis at its roots.

Trade, Minerals, and Agriculture

The phone call followed agreements made during the Busan summit in October. At that time, China agreed to temporarily lift restrictions on critical mineral exports, the U.S. committed to reducing tariffs on Chinese goods, and Beijing promised to increase soybean purchases from U.S. farmers.

Trump said that his latest conversation with Xi also touched on fentanyl, soybeans, and other agricultural products.

We have done a good, and very important, deal for our Great Farmers – and it will only get better,” he said.

China Daily reported that Xi viewed the post-Busan U.S.-China relationship as stable and positive. Xi called for expanding cooperation, reducing contentious issues, and maintaining mutual respect.

Trump referred to Xi as “a great leader” and expressed agreement with the Chinese president’s perspective on bilateral relations, including acknowledging China’s role in the Allied victory of World War II.
