TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, August 7, 2025, that reciprocal tariffs on more than 90 countries had taken effect, stating that billions of dollars in customs duties would be collected.
Tariffs on foreign products imported into the United States will be subject to customs duties ranging from 15 to 50 percent.
"RECIPROCAL TARIFFS TAKE EFFECT AT MIDNIGHT (0400GMT) TONIGHT! BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, LARGELY FROM COUNTRIES THAT HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE UNITED STATES FOR MANY YEARS, LAUGHING ALL THE WAY, WILL START FLOWING INTO THE USA," Trump wrote on social media as reported by Anadolu.
"THE ONLY THING THAT CAN STOP AMERICA’S GREATNESS WOULD BE A RADICAL LEFT COURT THAT WANTS TO SEE OUR COUNTRY FAIL!" Trump added.
The president is likely referring to ongoing court cases where his authority to impose these tariffs is being debated.
Companies and states have filed lawsuits against Trump's tariff policies, alleging that the policies have caused economic losses.
These cases are almost certain to be taken to the U.S. Supreme Court after the plaintiffs secured victories in a series of court rulings, prompting the Trump administration to file appeals.
The imposition of these tariffs also raises concerns about potential price increases for consumers, at a time when Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is cautious about further interest rate cuts amid sharp economic uncertainties.
Last week, Trump signed an executive order to impose "reciprocal" tariffs on 67 countries, although this move was feared to increase inflation and suppress job growth.
Among the countries with the highest import tariff rates are India and Brazil (50 percent), Laos and Myanmar (40 percent), Switzerland (39 percent), as well as Iraq and Serbia (35 percent).
Initially, India was only subject to a 25 percent tariff. However, on Wednesday, Trump announced an additional 25 percent tariff as a punishment for New Delhi's ongoing purchase of oil from Russia.
