TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - According to the US military, as reported by Al Jazeera, two US navy pilots were shot down over the Red Sea in what appears to have been a "friendly fire" incident.
Later on Sunday, Houthi fighters in Yemen asserted that they had "targeted" the USS Harry S. Truman, an aircraft carrier, the day before, resulting in the "shooting down of an F-18 aircraft."
Both pilots were found alive after ejecting from their aircraft, which was struck early on Sunday, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), with one pilot sustaining minor injuries.
According to CENTCOM, the plane had just taken off from the deck of the Truman and the event "was not the result of hostile fire, and a full investigation is underway."
The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden are essential routes for international trade, and the Houthis have attacked ships connected to Israel on numerous occasions. The group claims that its actions are in support of Palestinians in Gaza, where Israel has been committing genocide against the Palestinian people for over a year, murdering over 45,000 people.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said in a video message that the organization also used eight drones and seventeen cruise missiles during its assault.
But according to CENTCOM, earlier, the Yemeni rebels launched an antiship cruise missile and several Houthi drones, which were shot down by warships and aircraft.
Netanyahu promises to exact revenge on the Houthis
As cited from AL Jazeera, after the Houthi rebels launched a missile at Tel Aviv on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to strike again, saying that Israel will attack what he called the final leg of "Iran's axis of evil."
Following the predawn attack on Saturday, the Houthis used what they said was a ballistic missile to strike Israel's commercial center, injuring 16 people and prompting many to flee their homes.
"We will use force against the Houthis, just as we did against the terrorist branches of Iran's axis of evil. In a video statement, Netanyahu declared, "With force, determination, and sophistication."
The Houthi attack on Tel Aviv on Saturday was the second of its kind against Israel this week and one of several since the start of the Gaza War.
In response to Houthi attacks on commerce in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, US and British forces have hit rebel targets in Yemen on multiple occasions. Following rebel attacks on its territory, Israel has also bombed the Houthis in the past, targeting ports and oil facilities.
Israeli airplanes hit Sanaa for the first time on Thursday in the most recent Israeli attack against the Houthis.
