TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Professor of international law at the University of Indonesia (UI), Hikmahanto Juwana, urged the Indonesian government to reject the United States' proposal to relocate two million Palestinians. According to him, the discourse on relocating the Palestinian people is not in accordance with the Indonesian constitution.

"According to the Indonesian constitution, the rejection of the US proposal is in order to oppose the policy to perpetuate colonization on earth," said Juwana in a written statement on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

The Chancellor of Jenderal Ahmad Yani University said that Indonesian people who sympathize need to be more careful. This is because he considers the idea of relocating the Palestinian population could be a US strategy under President Trump to help Israel perpetuate Israeli colonization of Palestinian land.

According to him, relocation could mean emptying Palestinian land from its own citizens. "The conflict in Palestine is actually a problem of illegal land occupation by the Zionist Israeli government," he said.

Previously, the proposal came from Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff. In an NBC report, an official involved in the US leadership transition stated that Witkoff planned to visit Gaza to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire. While ensuring the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and discussions on the next phase, Trump and his team also noted the importance of a long-term solution to end the conflict in Gaza.

"The question of how to rebuild Gaza remains unanswered, as well as where the estimated 2 million Palestinians could be relocated in the meantime. Indonesia, for example, is one location that is being discussed for some of them," the transition official said, echoing Witkoff's comments.

One of the issues currently being faced is the fate and whereabouts of the two million Palestinians in Gaza whose fate and whereabouts must be considered as Gaza's reconstruction proceeds. However, the Trump transition team acknowledged that the discourse is highly controversial among both Palestinians and Arabs in general. Many believe that relocation to another location would provide Israel with an excuse to expel Gazans from their homeland.
