TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States is weighing the removal of tariffs on goods that cannot be produced domestically. Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, shared this update recently.
"if there's something that's not made in the U.S. at all, that there's an appetite, and [US Trade Representative] Jamieson Greer is leading the effort to study these matters, that there's an appetite to exempt things if they're really not meant to be made in the U.S. because of, you know, like climate or things like that," Hassett said on CBS's "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" talk show.
The top economic adviser also said he believes the US Supreme Court will back the government. Justices are currently deciding if the president can use federal emergency laws to set tariffs alone. The Trump administration has used these laws to place duties on almost every trading partner. "we really expect the Supreme Court is going to find with us," Hassett stated.
On November 9, President Donald Trump spoke on the value of these import taxes. He claimed the tariffs helped lower inflation and pushed stock prices to record highs. He also hit back at critics of the policy. Trump argued that the US has gained trillions from tariffs, which will help pay down the $37 trillion national debt.
$2,000 for Low-Income Citizens
The president also promised a "dividend" of $2,000 for most Americans. This money would come from tariff revenue, though high-income earners would not qualify.
However, Hassett noted that these $2,000 checks depend on what happens in Congress. He added, "I would expect that in the new year, the President will bring forth a proposal to Congress to make that happen."
Trump has discussed returning tariff funds to Americans since July. Last month, he posted on social media that "dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high-income people!) will be paid to everyone."
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that the payments would likely target households making less than $100,000, though the limit is still "in discussion."
Hassett explained that Congress must approve the money first. The funds would likely move through the tax code, requiring a new law to let the Treasury Department send the checks. Despite the hurdles, Hassett pointed to "a lot of positive news about the economy" since July, believing this growth makes the cash assistance more likely.
