TEMPO.CO, JakartaVirgin Australia on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, canceled all flights in and out of Bali. This decision was made as volcano ash from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki’s eruptions made flying unsafe.

The Indonesian volcano has erupted at least three times since Saturday, spewing volcanic ash column up to 9 kilometers high.

"Due to the presence of volcanic ash, it is currently unsafe to operate flights to and from Denpasar," Virgin Australia stated on Wednesday.

Approximately 15 flights between Australia and Bali have been affected, the airline said.

The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, which started on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 7:18 p.m. local time until Wednesday morning, produced thunderous sounds heard as far as Maumere City, 60 kilometers away from the volcano.

"The eruption was followed by streams of incandescent lava towards the northeast up to approximately 3.8 kilometers and the west up to 3.9 kilometers from the crater,” said the Head of the Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, in his written statement on Wednesday.

The Geological Agency has maintained the Alert status for Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki since November 3, 2024. This status followed a major eruption on November 3, 2024, which resulted in the death of 10 people.

The danger zone radius was set at 7 kilometers from the mountain peak. Meanwhile, the radius of the at-risk area in the southwest and northwest sectors, initially set at 8 kilometers, has been expanded to 9 kilometers.

The Geological Agency also advised the community to be alert to the potential of rain-induced volcanic mudflows. Residents affected by ashfalls are advised to mask up to avoid inhaling volcanic ash and risking their respiratory systems.
