TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has tasked Minister of Education and Culture, Abdul Mu'ti, to integrate coding and artificial intelligence (AI) into the curriculum for elementary and junior high school students.
“We must not be left behind by India. Once again, to reach the Golden Indonesia vision, we need a golden generation. We need more coding experts, AI experts, machine learning experts, and others,” Gibran said during a coordination meeting to evaluate elementary and secondary education in Gandaria, South Jakarta, on Monday, November 11, 2024.
Minister Mu'ti confirmed that the Ministry of Education and Culture will accommodate Gibran's idea, incorporating coding and AI as optional subjects in the upcoming curriculum renewal. However, he emphasized that the implementation of these subjects will be limited to schools with adequate facilities.
“These subjects require sophisticated tools and good internet infrastructure, which not all schools currently possess. We hope this initiative will support the President's digitalization program,” Mu'ti explained.
President Prabowo Subianto has previously expressed a keen interest in improving mathematics education, particularly at the early stages of learning. Minister Mu'ti revealed that the President believes mathematics is a fundamental building block for science and technology.
“There is a proposal to enhance mathematics teaching in grades 1-4 of elementary school and perhaps, to introduce mathematics education at the kindergarten level,” Mu'ti said.
