WHO Warns 137,000 Children and Pregnant Women in Gaza Face Malnutrition Risk

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said more than 100,000 children and 37,000 pregnant and nursing mothers in the Gaza Strip are estimated to still experience acute malnutrition until April 2026.

The statement was made following a report from the UN Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which warned that at least 1.6 million Gaza residents face high levels of acute food insecurity until mid-April next year.

As reported by WAFA and quoted by Antara, Tedros warned that in the worst-case scenario, including the possibility of renewed conflict and the cessation of humanitarian aid, the entire Gaza Strip is at risk of facing famine by mid-April 2026.

In a post on platform X, he mentioned that the progress made in preventing famine remains very fragile.

According to him, the population in the Gaza Strip continues to struggle amid massive infrastructure damage, loss of livelihoods and local food production, and various restrictions on humanitarian operations.

"At the same time, only 50 percent of Gaza's health facilities are partially functional and they face shortages of essential supplies and equipment, which are often subject to complex entry procedures and restrictions with many classified as potentially dual-use," he said.

Tedros added that to improve life-saving services and expand access to health care, WHO urges the acceleration of approval and access for critical medical supplies and prefabricated hospital structures to enter the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli genocide war in Gaza has killed at least 70,669 Palestinian residents and injured 171,165 people since October 2023 in a brutal attack that has also left the area in ruins.
