TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A model car made of clay, finished in metallic blue, black, and silver, now sits in the lobby of the Ratu Prabu 1 Building in Cilandak, South Jakarta. After being showcased at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in August 2025, the car is now placed at the entrance of the offices of Teknologi Militer Indonesia (TMI). “When it was displayed at GIIAS, many visitors asked when they could place orders,” said TMI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Harsusanto in an interview with Tempo on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
Displayed on the front of the car is the i2C logo, short for Indigenous Indonesian Car. The prototype is being touted as the first locally made electric car and a prospective national car. The project is one of the initiatives requested by President Prabowo Subianto. The target is to begin production of the national electric car in late 2027, with orders opening in early 2028.
The plan entered the public spotlight in October 2025. After a full cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Central Jakarta, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the national electric car project had been proposed for inclusion on the list of national strategic projects (PSN). “Once it is designated a PSN, I think implementation will be faster,” Agus said on October 20. According to him, the status would ease preparations for production schemes, including factory construction. “So the PSN status is what we are fighting for first,” he said.
Harsusanto explained that the PSN status was planned to be attached to the i2C development project that TMI had been running since last year. The company, established by the Ministry of Defense through the Defense Resources Potential Development Foundation in 2020—when Prabowo was still serving as Defense Minister—had previously focused on procuring major weapons systems. After receiving a new mandate, TMI shifted its focus to developing a national electric car.
