NATIONAL INFO - Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (Mendes PDT) Yandri Susanto, has emphasized that the welfare of village communities is a fundamental indicator of Indonesia's overall progress. In his view, achieving the vision of "Indonesia Emas" in 2045 requires a multi-faceted approach that prioritizes the well-being and empowerment of villages across the nation. “The village is the front line of our development,” Yandri stated at the launch of the Technical Capacity Improvement Provider Training Platform (P2KTD) held at the Bengkulu Training Center on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. “Our tagline, ‘Build the Village, Build Indonesia,’ reflects this reality: if we strengthen our villages, we are strengthening the whole nation.”
To advance this vision, the Ministry of Villages (Kemendesa PDT) has been tasked as a key player in executing the Village Government Strengthening and Development Program (P3PD), a collaborative initiative between the Government of Indonesia and the World Bank. This program aims to enhance local governance, infrastructure, and economic resilience within rural communities, aligning with national goals of inclusive and equitable development.
In his speech, Yandri encouraged village heads to actively engage community members in decision-making processes, particularly when it comes to development policies. Public hearings, such as the traditional village meetings, provide residents with opportunities to voice their experiences, concerns, and aspirations. These forums, he said, create an environment of transparency and trust, enabling local leaders to better identify and address socio-economic issues unique to their communities.
“Building villages is not a one-person task,” Yandri said. “We cannot solely rely on village heads or blame them when challenges arise. We must all work together, shoulder-to-shoulder, to address the many issues that are prevalent in rural areas.”
For Yandri, this cooperative approach represents a vital pillar for achieving sustainable growth. He highlighted that the ministry’s efforts go beyond mere infrastructure development, advocating for capacity-building initiatives that empower village communities to lead their own progress. Programs like P2KTD provide technical training to village facilitators and stakeholders, equipping them with the skills to identify, plan, and implement projects tailored to their local needs.
Yandri also urged other stakeholders such as regional governments, businesses, and civil society groups to support village-level development. Such cooperation, he argued, can foster greater social resilience and contribute to poverty reduction, which remains a critical issue in many rural areas.
Furthermore, he believes that focusing on village welfare could help to alleviate urban migration pressures, as rural residents would have greater access to economic opportunities within their own communities. This balanced development, in turn, would narrow regional disparities and build a more inclusive economy.
Reflecting on the broader implications of village development, Yandri remarked, “By enhancing our villages, we are not just securing the livelihood of rural populations; we are nurturing a foundation that supports Indonesia’s entire economic and social structure. A prosperous, resilient village is the true reflection of a prosperous, resilient nation.”
As Indonesia approaches its 100th year of independence in 2045, Yandri envisions a nation where villages are not left behind but instead serve as models of sustainable development. With programs like P3PD and P2KTD, he remains optimistic that these rural communities can thrive and evolve, contributing significantly to Indonesia’s pursuit of its Golden Era.(*)
