TEMPO.CO, JakartaPhilippines’ match against Vietnam for Group B of the 2024 AFF Cup ended in a 1-1 draw. The match took place at Rizal Memorial Stadium, Manila, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 8:00 p.m.

Vietnam played aggressively during the game, recording 15 shots, while the hosting Philippines only managed to fire seven shots. The Azkals, however, scored the first goal in the 68th minute.

Philippines was set for a narrow win, as the 1-0 score lasted until the last minute. Vietnam successfully scored a goal in the 90+7' minute of the game.

With this 1-1 draw, the Philippines dropped to fourth place with three points gained from three draws. The team fell behind Myanmar, which picked up three points after a 3-2 win over Laos earlier today.

The top position in group B standings is still occupied by Vietnam with seven points, followed by the Indonesian national team with four points. Meanwhile, the bottom of the standings is occupied by Laos with two points from the four previous matches.

How the game proceeded

In the first half, Vietnam fired repeated pressure on the Azkals' backline. When the game had only been running for three minutes, Philippines defender Kike Linares had to get a yellow card while trying to block Vietnam's attack.

In the 11th minute, Vietnam was awarded a penalty kick, but the referee later canceled it after checking VAR. The score remained 0-0 until halftime.

In the first half match, the Philippines made a substitution in the 28th minute. Linares, who previously received a yellow card in the third minute, was pulled out. Coach Albert Capellas replaced him with Amani Aguinaldo.

After halftime, the Philippines, which was still under pressure from Vietnam, played more aggressively. In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Oskari Kekkonen had to get a yellow card to block the Golden Warriors' attack.

In the 68th minute, the hosting team surprisingly scored through midfielder Jarvey Gayoso, who was able to score a goal just two minutes after entering the field to replace Bjorn Martin Kristensen.

The goal was created from a counter-attack scheme. There was a scramble for the ball between Javier Mariona and a Vietnamese defender. However, the ball instead went to the center of the penalty box, which Gayoso immediately received. The ball from his left-footed shot found its way into the net.

The score remained until the 90th minute, with a total of 11 minutes of added time from the referee. Vietnam took advantage of the extra time to draw a 1-1 score in the 90+7th minute through midfielder Doan Ngoc Tan.

What it means for Indonesia

The Philippines' failure to edge over Vietnam benefits the Garuda Squad. The Indonesian national team keeps its second position in the Group B standings, as the Philippines only earned one point.

After their home match against Vietnam, the Philippines will take on Indonesia for their final game at the Manahan Stadium in Solo on Saturday, December 21. The Garuda squad targets full points to qualify for the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Cup.
