Imlek 2025: 4 Zodiac Signs to Watch Out for 'Ciong' in the Year of the Wood Snake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese New Year, locally known Imlek, is a much-awaited celebration for Chinese communities worldwide, and one of its unique traditions is the lunar zodiac signs (Shio). In 2025, the Chinese New Year will mark the beginning of the Year of the Snake, according to the Kongzili calendar, which falls on January 29.

This year is associated with the Wood Snake, an embodiment of both the Snake zodiac and the Wood element. Feng Shui expert Yulius Fang said that certain Chinese zodiac signs will be more prone to experience bad luck or misfortune, or ciong (), in 2025. These signs are the Pig, Monkey, Tiger, and Snake.

Yulius elaborates that when the components of a person’s Chinese zodiac sign in their birth chart experience ciong, they often face changes—sometimes significant ones. The cycle of ciong follows a regular rhythm, affecting each of the 12 zodiac signs on an alternating basis each year.

"In the 12-year cycle, everyone is likely to face at least four years where they are influenced by ciong," Yulius says, as reported by Antara. "Rather than viewing ciong as something to fear or a looming threat, it should be seen as an opportunity for change—a chance to adjust, improve, and rise to a challenge."

One of Yulius’s key recommendations for those affected by ciong this year is to avoid renovating homes or business spaces, as this can stir up negative energy or destabilize the existing harmony in the environment, potentially worsening the effects of ciong.

According to Yulius, "ciong" () is a Hokkien word for bad luck or misfortune. In the context of Feng Shui, ciong refers to the misalignment of one's zodiac sign with planetary influences, in particular the position of Jupiter (the largest planet in our solar system) in relation to Earth. When certain zodiac signs collide with Jupiter’s vast energy, it creates an imbalance, triggering ciong or misfortune.

Historically, Feng Shui experts have looked to the sky, observing celestial patterns to understand their impact on human fortune through Chinese astrology, such as BaZi. They also studied the effect of celestial alignments on buildings and nature through the principles of Feng Shui.

For those with unlucky zodiac signs in the Year of the Wood Snake, Yulius advises focusing on self-improvement starting from the Chinese New Year on January 29. He stresses that while ciong might seem like bad luck, it’s not about negativity—it’s a sign of change. "Think of it as being nudged out of your comfort zone, an invitation to grow," he concludes.
