TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Another earthquake hit Bener Meriah and Central Aceh after the series of tremors at the tail end of 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the earthquake early Sunday, January 4, 2025, at 03:54 a.m. local time.

Initial information from BMKG logged the earthquake at magnitude 2.8, but the vibrations were felt at III-IV MMI scale. At III MMI, the tremor is felt inside houses, akin to trucks passing by, while IV MMI vibrations rattle doors and windows.

Similar to the series of quakes that occurred on December 29-31, 2015, the recent earthquake was centered inland with shallow depth, less than 10 kilometers. The earthquake early this morning was centered 6 kilometers west of the center of Bener Meriah Regency and at a depth of 6 kilometers.

At the end of last year, a series of shallow inland earthquakes affected the activity of Mount Burni Telong's magma in Bener Meriah. The Geological Agency had elevated the volcanic activity status to Level III on late Tuesday, December 30, 2025, before lowering it back down by Saturday.

According to BMKG data, the recent earthquake in Bener Meriah occurred approximately 54 minutes after another inland earthquake in Sumatra, specifically in Ogan Komering Ilir, Riau. The agency recorded the earthquake with a 4.4 magnitude, which was felt at II-III MMI scale.
