TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that 16 people died in a subsequent flood that hit Siau Tagulandang Biaro Islands or Sitaro Regency, North Sulawesi, early Monday, January 5, 2026.

The Head of BNPB's Data and Information Center, Abdul Muhari, said the second disaster after the flood and landslides last November also forced hundreds of residents to evacuate.

Three people remain missing as of Tuesday, January 6, 2026. "The search process for three of the missing people is underway, while hundreds of affected residents were forced to evacuate to safer places," he said at the BNPB Office, Jakarta, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

So far, five bodies have been identified, said BNPB. Additionally, 22 injured residents have been referred to local health centers, while another two were transferred to a hospital in Manado for further medical treatment.

The initial number of the displaced reached 682 residents, with the numbers being subject to updates as the evacuation process persisted.

The flash floods in Sitaro Islands were caused by the torrential downpour that began early Monday, causing the river water to overflow at 02:30 a.m. local time.

The incident then affected four districts, including the East Siau, Central Siau, West Siau, and South West Siau Districts, with the affected areas spreading across two sub-districts and six villages.

Seven houses were swept away by the floodwater, while 29 houses were severely damaged. Meanwhile, the flood caused slight damage in 112 other houses. Several road accesses were reported to be blocked, and a number of office buildings and infrastructures suffered damage.

The Sitaro Islands Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is working closely with the North Sulawesi BPBD, Basarnas, as well as military and police personnel.

According to Abdul, the regional government has also declared a hydrometeorological disaster emergency response status for Siau Tagulandang Biaro Islands Regency for 14 days, starting from January 5 to January 18, 2026.

"[Authorities] are prioritizing searches for missing victims and meeting the basic needs of affected communities thus far," said Abdul.
