TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The recent earthquake was felt shaking Kuta, Bali, and several areas in East Java and Yogyakarta. This earthquake was reported to have occurred on Monday morning at 04:40 local time.
Information shared by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) states that the earthquake had a Magnitude of 5.0-revised from the initial info which mentioned M5.2. The tremor spread from its epicenter in the sea in the Indian Ocean, 126 kilometers southwest of Blitar, East Java.
Originating from a depth of 10 kilometers, the earthquake was also reported to be less intense in Blitar, Nganjuk, Tulungagung, and even Karangkates in Malang Regency. It was also felt in Bantul, Yogyakarta. "The type of shallow earthquake was caused by the activity of an active underwater fault," said the Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, Daryono, in a statement shared after the earthquake.
According to him, the tremor felt in Kuta was at a II to III MMI scale. This means that if the earthquake had occurred during the day, the vibrations would have only been felt by some people inside the houses, but there were also those who felt it distinctly as if a truck had passed by. "Modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami," Daryono added.
This earthquake information, shared by BMKG on social media account X, was responded to by hundreds of other users. Among them were people from Malang, Yogyakarta, and Blitar who admitted to feeling the quite strong tremor. "It felt really strong, I thought it was a volcanic earthquake from Semeru," tweeted one of them.
Previously, throughout Sunday, 23 November, BMKG recorded five earthquake events whose tremors could be felt. Starting from the M4.2 earthquake felt in Palasa, Parigi Moutong, Central Sulawesi, in the morning to the M2.5 earthquake in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara, in the evening.
Both were centered on land. However, the intensity of the tremors in Parigi Moutong reached III to IV MMI while in Lembata II MMI.
Three other earthquakes were M5.2 felt in Tobelo, North Halmahera, North Maluku; M3.9 felt in Air Bangis, West Pasaman, West Sumatra; and M3.9 felt in Sumbawa and Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara.
