BMKG Issues Week-Long Extreme Weather Warning Across Indonesia

3 weeks ago 56

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a public warning about potential extreme weather as heavy rainfall is expected across multiple regions in Indonesia over the coming week.

These volatile conditions may trigger hydrometeorological hazards such as floods, landslides, and strong winds.

Guswanto, Deputy of Meteorology at BMKG, explained that the recent increase in rainfall intensity is driven by complex atmospheric dynamics operating on global, regional, and local scales.

In a press release on Monday, November 10, 2025, he said: "The main factors influencing the current weather include Tropical Cyclone Fung-Wong, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), and the Kelvin and Rossby Equatorial atmospheric waves, which are expected to remain active in Indonesia until mid-November."

Currently located in the eastern Philippine Sea and moving northwest toward Luzon, Tropical Cyclone Fung-Wong indirectly promotes cloud formation and wind speeds of up to 25 knots. Areas most affected include North Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and northern Papua.

Guswanto added that the combination of MJO phase 5 activity (over the Maritime Continent) with the Kelvin and Rossby Equatorial waves is contributing to the formation of convective clouds across western, central, and eastern Indonesia over the next week.

He urged the public to stay alert to sudden weather changes, including heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities during storms and keep away from large trees and fragile structures.

In addition, environmental hygiene should be maintained to ensure drainage channels remain clear, reducing the risk of flooding.

Fishermen and sea transport users are also warned of high waves, particularly in the western Indian Ocean near Sumatra-southern Java, the Banda Sea, the Flores Sea, and the Arafura Sea.

Alert for Heavy to Very Heavy Rain

BMKG’s Director of Public Meteorology, Andri Ramdhani, projected extreme weather affecting most of Indonesia from November 10 to 16, 2025.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected between November 10 and 12 across Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, Jakarta, DI Yogyakarta, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara.

BMKG has declared a heavy-to-very-heavy rain alert (SIAGA) for Aceh, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, North Maluku, West Papua, Central Papua, Highland Papua, South Papua, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara.

"Strong winds are expected in Banten, Bengkulu, Lampung, West Nusa Tenggara, and West Sumatra," Andri said.

From November 13 to 16, strong winds may also impact Central Java, West Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, Bali, Jakarta, and Banten. During this period, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Bengkulu, West Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, all of Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, Central Papua, and Highland Papua.

Moderate to heavy rain is forecast to continue across major areas in Sumatra, including Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau and the Riau Islands, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, and Lampung. Similar conditions are expected in Banten, Jakarta, Central Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, most of Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, and parts of West Papua, Central Papua, and Papua.
