TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The wind from Tropical Cyclone Jenna, which developed from Cyclone 91S, has the potential to cause high waves in several Indonesian waters. To alert sailors, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning effective from January 6 to 9, 2026.

BMKG forecaster Ryan Putra Pambudi stated that the wind swirl in the southwest Indian Ocean near Bengkulu has increased wind speed. The wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves from the northwest to the northeast at speeds of 6-25 knots. This speed is similar to the wind in the southern region, which moves to the northwest.

"The highest wind speed was observed in the North Natuna Sea and the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu to Lampung," Ryan said in a written statement on Tuesday, January 6, 2025.

The Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) in Jakarta had previously predicted, through monitoring, that Cyclone Jenna would intensify into a Category 3 tropical cyclone and move southwest, away from Indonesian territory. As of December 5, the cyclone's speed reached 50 knots or approximately 95 kilometers per hour, with a minimum air pressure of 990 hPa.

The BMKG team stated that high waves of 2.5 to 4 meters are possible in the North Natuna Sea, the Indian Ocean south of East Java and Yogyakarta, and the waters south of Bali and Nusa Tenggara. The same prediction applies to the waters north of Southwest and West Papua in the Pacific Ocean, as well as to the waters north of Maluku. "The potential for high waves in these areas could pose a risk to navigation safety," Ryan said.

Regularly, BMKG advises small fishing boat fishermen to be cautious of winds exceeding 15 knots and sea waves over 1.25 meters. Tugboats must also pay attention to wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights exceeding 1.5 meters.

Ferry captains are urged to be cautious when wind speeds exceed 21 knots and wave heights reach 2.5 meters. Large fleets, such as cargo ships and cruise ships, are required to monitor conditions when wind speeds exceed 27 knots and wave heights reach 4 meters.
