TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A landslide swept Temanggung Regency in Central Java yesterday, killing a resident. The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, around 2:30 p.m. local time.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said that the victim (age 70), who was buried under landslide materials, was a resident of Kranggan District.
"In addition to the deceased, the landslide also resulted in one injured person, two people evacuating to relatives' homes, and affecting 14 others," said the Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, in a written statement on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
According to Muhari, the landslide was triggered by a two-hour torrential rain on the area with untable soil structure. Four villages were affected by the disaster, including Canggal, Sanggrahan, Pendowo, and Persada Villa Gedua.
Temanggung Regency's Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported one severely damaged house and one moderately damaged house due to the landslide. This incident also caused the shoulder of the road connecting Kranggan-Pringsurat Districts to subside, said Muhari.
At the same time, flooding also struck five sub-districts and villages in Temanggung and Kranggan Districts. "Including Puworejo, Mdureso, Kowangan, Guntur, and Kranggan," said Muhari.
Muhari mentioned that water ranging from 10 to 80 centimeters temporarily inundated residential areas due to the breach of the embankment in Srimpi Baru Housing Complex. BPBD Temanggung Regency reported the water had receded in all affected areas by 11:50 p.m.
As of December 18, 2024, joint personnel continue the clean-up efforts at all affected areas and distribute aid to landslide and flooding victims.
BNPB urges residents to remain vigilant of subsequent floods and landslides, given the weather forecast still indicates heavy rain in Temanggung.
"For residents living in hilly locations and in vicinity of cliffs, be vigilant of heavy rain that lasts for more than one hour. Immediately conduct self-evacuation to safer places to avoid potential landslide risks," said Muhari.
