TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is preparing 442 temporary housing units for approximately 2,000 families affected by the eruption of Mount Lewotobi in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. These duplex houses will serve as interim shelters for those awaiting the construction of permanent housing in a designated relocation area.
BNPB Head Suharyanto assured that all affected residents, whether in temporary shelters or staying with relatives, will receive permanent housing. “We understand that living in the old, eruption-affected area is dangerous, even if it may seem safe now,” he said in a written statement on Monday, November 25, 2024.
According to Suharyanto, the government is currently finalizing the plans for permanent housing, including the selection of suitable locations. The process involves various considerations, such as land ownership and environmental regulations.
He added that the government is also providing financial assistance to residents who choose to stay with relatives or in alternative accommodations. They will receive a monthly allowance of Rp500,000 for six months, with the possibility of an extension.
On Sunday, November 24, 2024, Suharyanto visited East Flores to assess the situation and inspect the logistics warehouse, temporary housing sites, and permanent housing construction sites.
Residents and visitors are still prohibited from doing activities within a 7-kilometer radius of the peak of Mount Lewotobi, with additional restrictions of 8 kilometers in the southwest and northwest directions.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, who accompanied the team, mentioned that temporary housing would be completed in the next two months, stressing the need for a thorough relocation plan.
“We must not only build houses but also build lives. We need to consider the social aspects [of the relocation] and residents’ economic sources,” he said, requesting that the location should be near their gardens or lands for their livelihoods.
