TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan Airlines offers passengers to deliver their luggage to their designated hotels when tourists visit Tokyo. The same-day delivery is priced reasonably at 4,500 yen or approximately Rp472,000 per luggage. This service is available for foreign tourists arriving at terminal three of Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
According to a press release quoted by The Independent, this new initiative is designed to address congestion issues in Tokyo. Without carrying luggage, passengers can go to their hotel by using public transportation such as trains, buses, and the busy Tokyo subway.
“The service aims to provide a seamless and stress-free travel experience by ensuring that tourists can enjoy their time in Tokyo without the burden of carrying heavy luggage,” the press release read. “By offering this service, JAL is committed to enhancing the convenience and comfort of foreign visitors, contributing to a more enjoyable and efficient travel experience.”
The same-day delivery service covers 14 districts throughout Tokyo, including Shinjuku, Shinagawa, Chiyoda, Chuo, Minato, Koto, Ota, Shibuya, Taito, Toshima, Bunkyo, Sumida, Meguro, and Edogawa
How to Get the Delivery Service
To enjoy this service, travelers arriving in Tokyo must make a reservation in advance. According to the Japan Airlines website, passengers are required to make a reservation and payment using a 2D barcode on the poster in front of the JAL ABC counter located in the arrival lobby.
“After completing the application, issue a baggage sticker from the issuing machine next to the poster, attach it to your suitcase, and then check it in at the ‘JAL ABC counter’ located in the arrival lobby,” the airline said.
The delivery destination is limited to hotels only. For those who check in for the delivery service before 4 p.m. local time, they will receive their luggage at the hotel by 8 p.m. Meanwhile, travelers arriving at the airport between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., their baggage will be delivered no later than 10 p.m.
Free Domestic Tickets
Same-day delivery service is the latest initiative from Japan Airlines to encourage tourist travel throughout the country. In September, the airline offeredfree domestic flights to international passengers to any destination in Japan.
Now, passengers coming from Singapore can fly to Tokyo and depart on a domestic flight to Sapporo in northern Japan at no additional cost. However, visitors must book the international flight with Japan Airlines and a corresponding domestic flight in the same reservation.
This service is only available to tourists from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, China, and Taiwan.
Record of Foreign Tourist Visits
Japan received a surge of visits from foreign tourists in 2024, partly due to the weakened yen. The Japanese government hopes to surpass the 32 million visitor target this year. In July, Japan broke its monthly visitor record with 3.2 million tourists, about 66 percent more than the same month in 2023.
However, some regions in Japan are taking steps to mitigate the impacts of overtourism. In May, the city of Fujikawaguchiko installed barriers to obstruct the view of Mount Fuji. The picturesque sight of Japan's highest mountain was attracting crowds of tourists who littered, disregarded traffic signs, and overcrowded the area.
