TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Chairperson of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) Setya Novanto, who was convicted of corruption, has been granted parole from Sukamiskin Penitentiary in Bandung, West Java.

"Yes, (Setya Novanto) was released yesterday. He was granted parole after his sentence review was approved, reducing his prison term from 15 years to 12.5 years," said Kusnali, Head of the West Java Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, as quoted by Antara on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

Kusnali emphasized that the parole for Setya Novanto was granted in accordance with regulations, as he had already served two-thirds of his 12.5-year prison term.

"Based on the calculation of two-thirds of the prison term, he became eligible for parole on August 16, 2025," he explained.

He noted that despite being released on parole, the former DPR Chairperson is still obliged to report regularly to Sukamiskin Penitentiary.

"Setya Novanto has been serving his sentence since 2017 and has consistently received sentence reductions. He was released ahead of the August 17 commemoration, which means he is not eligible for remission on that date," Kusnali explained.

The Supreme Court had earlier granted Novanto’s request for a case review, cutting his sentence to 12.5 years in prison for his involvement in the electronic ID card corruption case. The Court also revised his fine to Rp500 million, with a six-month prison term to be imposed if he fails to pay.

Novanto was originally sentenced to 15 years in prison, fined Rp500 million or three months in jail, and ordered to pay US$7.3 million in compensation.

The Golkar politician was found guilty of corruption in the electronic ID card procurement project during the 2011–2013 fiscal years.
