The Crystal Palace football club has won the Community Shield after defeating Liverpool in a penalty shootout with a score of 3-2 at Wembley Stadium, London, on Sunday evening WIB, August 10, 2025. The penalty shootout took place in the opening match of the English Premier League after both teams drew 2-2 in normal time.
This is Palace's first Community Shield title. They showed an impressive performance at the beginning of this season against Liverpool, the reigning champion of the Premier League.
Liverpool quickly took the lead in the 4th minute through new striker Hugo Ekitike. Receiving a pass from Florian Wirtz, Ekitike released a low shot that found the corner of the Palace's net.
Palace equalized in the 17th minute through Jean-Philippe Mateta's penalty kick, after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr in the box.
Liverpool regained the lead in the 21st minute with an unexpected goal from wing-back Jeremie Frimpong. His lob from the right side found its way into the Palace net without the goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, being able to stop it. The score remained 2-1 in favor of Liverpool until half-time.
In the second half, Liverpool continued to press. Ekitike almost scored his second goal, but his header from a Milos Kerkez pass went wide.
Palace did not stay silent. Their counterattacks troubled Liverpool's defense, and Ismaila Sarr even created a golden opportunity that missed the goal.
Palace equalized 2-2 in the 77th minute thanks to Ismaila Sarr, who took advantage of Adam Wharton's pass after a quick counterattack following Will Hughes's ball recovery from Cody Gakpo.
Until the final whistle, the score remained level, forcing the match to be continued to a penalty shootout. And the penalty shootout determined Palace's victory.
Palace's penalty takers, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Ismaila Sarr, and Justin Devenny, successfully carried out their tasks, while Eberechi Eze and Borna Sosa failed. From Liverpool's side, only Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai scored, while Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Harvey Elliott failed to do so.
Lineups:
Crystal Palace: Dean Henderson; Chris Richards, Lacroix, Marc Guehi (Justin Devenny 90'), Tyrick Mitchell (Borna Sosa 79'); Adam Wharton (Jefferson Lerma 85'), Daichi Kamada (Will Hughes 29'), Daniel Munoz; Ismaila Sarr, Eberechi Eze, Jean-Philippe Mateta.
