TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ten people died after a flash flood struck a camping area on the outskirts of Bayannur City, Inner Mongolia, Northern China, on Saturday night, August 16, 2025.

China Daily reported that the flood occurred around 22:00 local time when strong waters surged through the upper reaches of the river in the Urat Middle Banner area.

Thirteen campers were initially reported missing. By Sunday morning, August 17, one person had been rescued, 10 bodies were recovered, and two people remained unaccounted for.

Rescue Efforts

China’s Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a task force to monitor evacuation operations. Local firefighting and rescue teams, including special forces, were also deployed.

According to CNA, the incident coincided with ongoing heavy rainfall brought by the East Asian monsoon affecting several regions of China.

The National Meteorological Center issued a blue alert for rainstorms on Sunday and predicted continued heavy rain in areas including Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, Qinghai, Guangxi, and Guangdong.

Some regions are expected to experience brief but intense showers exceeding 70 millimeters per hour, accompanied by thunder and strong winds. The central government has released safety advisories for affected areas.

Series of Extreme Weather

This flash flood is part of a series of hydro-meteorological disasters that have affected China since July. Prolonged rainfall has been caused by stalled monsoons in the north and south, a pattern experts link to climate change.

Approximately 1,000 kilometers from Bayannur, Beijing experienced heavy rain last month, which killed at least 44 people and forced over 70,000 residents to evacuate.

Bayannur is a key national hub for food production, especially wheat, vegetable oil, and sheep farming. The disaster could disrupt China’s food supply chain. In response, the central government announced an additional disaster relief fund of 430 million yuan, or around Rp967.5 billion, last week. Since April, the total relief fund has reached 5.8 billion yuan, or about Rp13.05 trillion.
