Death Toll from Sumatra Disaster Reaches 1,157

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of casualties due to floods and landslides that hit Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra has reached 1,157 as of Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Based on the geospatial data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the death toll stands at 1,157 people, which increased by three from three days ago across 52 affected regencies and cities. Meanwhile, the number of missing persons has reached 165.

The highest number of casualties comes from the province of Aceh with 530 fatalities. North Aceh contributed the most to the fatalities with 216,000 casualties.

Furthermore, North Sumatra recorded 365 fatalities, and West Sumatra with 262 casualties.

There are more than 381,000 evacuees in total. The majority of evacuees are from Aceh, totaling 356,700 in 18 affected regencies and cities. North Aceh has the highest number of evacuees, which is 166,900.

As of January 3, 2026, the BNPB recorded 178,478 damaged houses with a breakdown of 52,303 severely damaged, 43,933 moderately damaged, and 82,243 lightly damaged.

Furthermore, the BNPB also recorded the damage to buildings and various public facilities. As of January 3, 2026, there are 215 damaged health facilities, 3,188 damaged educational facilities, 803 damaged places of worship, 34 bridges cut off, and 81 roads cut off.

Previously, the Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, revealed that there were no additional fatalities at the Sumatra disaster sites on January 2, 2026. The ongoing search efforts have not found any new fatalities.

The BNPB stated that the joint search and rescue (SAR) team will continue the search operation. The team will focus on the locations they have identified as potential sites for the victims' bodies.

Muhari mentioned that the joint SAR team also did not find any missing persons until yesterday. As of January 2, the number of individuals still missing remains at 165.

Meanwhile, the number of evacuees in the three affected provinces has decreased. "The number of evacuees has decreased slightly by 73 individuals. So, the total as of today (January 2, 2026) is 380,287 individuals," said Muhari in a virtual press conference on Friday, January 2, 2026.
