TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The White House has announced that Indonesia will buy aircraft from the United States as part of a commercial agreement between companies in both countries, integrated into a broader trade deal.
"Procurement of aircraft currently valued at 3.2 billion USD (approximately Rp51.2 trillion, based on an exchange rate of Rp16,000 per US dollar)," the White House stated in a Joint Statement on the Framework for the United States-Indonesia Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, released on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, U.S. time.
Previously, on Tuesday, July 15, President Donald Trump announced Indonesia's commitment to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft, mostly Boeing 777 models. Trump stated this purchase plan was decided during direct discussions with President Prabowo Subianto.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday, said Indonesia "has committed to purchasing $15 Billion Dollars in U.S. Energy, $4.5 Billion Dollars in American Agricultural Products, and 50 Boeing Jets, many of them 777′s."
On a separate occasion, President Prabowo explained the reasons behind purchasing the dozens of Boeing aircraft. He said the planes, made by the U.S. manufacturer, will support the development of national flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk.
"Garuda must become the symbol of Indonesia. We are determined, I am determined to enlarge Garuda," Prabowo said after returning from a working visit at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The President noted that Garuda Indonesia needs a new fleet for its operational needs. He added that Boeing is known as a manufacturer of high-quality commercial aircraft. "There is no problem, because we need them, and they want to sell. Boeing aircraft are also quite good," Prabowo said.
Despite plans to acquire 50 Boeing aircraft, Prabowo confirmed that Indonesia will continue to buy aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus. However, he stopped short of providing further details on these Airbus purchases for the state-owned company.
According to Flightradar24, Boeing's 777 series includes several variants such as the 777-200, 777-200ER, 777-300, and 777-300ER. The latest variant, the 777X, boasts a longer wingspan and more fuel-efficient engines, with its maiden flight anticipated in the coming years.
Despite its advancements, Boeing has faced ongoing production challenges, resulting in delays for approximately 6,000 aircraft, as reported by Business Insider, citing Simple Flying. Specifically, the latest generation Boeing 777X program has been delayed by at least six years from its original schedule.
The Boeing 777X program was initially introduced in late 2013, with operations targeted to commence in 2020. However, due to certification constraints, the aircraft's launch has been rescheduled for 2026.
