TEMPO.CO, JakartaStatistics Indonesia (BPS) logs the highest figures for domestic travel since pre-pandemic years, with 1.02 billion tourists traveling within the country throughout 2024.

Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, said that the figure represented the largest number of domestic travels in the past six years. "It is even much higher than pre-pandemic numbers, with 2019 recording only 722 million trips," said Amalia in a press conference at the BPS Office in Jakarta on Monday, February 3, 2025.

Amalia stated that domestic tourist travel in 2024 also grew 21.61 percent from the previous year, as BPS logged about 838.7 million domestic tourist trips throughout the year.

In December 2024, domestic travels reached 101.1 million, an increase of 25.4 percent from November 2024, which amounted to 80.54 million trips. Amalia said the growth is influenced by the year-end holiday season, where people travel for Christmas and New Year.

Amalia conveyed that East Java Province became the main destination for domestic tourists in December 2024. According to BPS, about one-fifth of the total 101.1 million trips were made to East Java.

Java Island also became the most popular destination for domestic tourists, both for those traveling within or from outside Java Island. BPS recorded that around 69.19 percent of the 1.02 billion domestic tourist trips in 2024 were made on Java Island.

Meanwhile, BPS also recorded that 8.9 million trips overseas were made in 2024, up 18.99 percent from the previous year.

Amalia stated that the number of tourists traveling abroad was the highest in the past five years, but lower than pre-pandemic figures of 11.7 million in 2019.
