TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Donald Trump is predicted to appoint U.S. Senator Marco Rubio as the Secretary of State of the United States, according to sources on Monday as reported by Reuters. The Florida-born politician would be the first Latin person to serve as America's top diplomat after Trump, a Republican, assumed the presidency in January.
Marco Rubio is the most aggressive option on Donald Trump's shortlist for Secretary of State. In recent years, he has advocated for a tough foreign policy against America's enemies including China, Iran, and Cuba.
According to sources, Trump seems to have finalized his choice to appoint Rubio. There have been no comments from either Trump's or Rubio's representatives.
Compared to when Trump was in office in 2017, the current world situation is more unstable and dangerous. Wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as China getting closer to U.S. enemies like Russia and Iran.
The Ukraine crisis will be Rubio's top agenda. Rubio, 53, stated in a recent interview that Ukraine needs to seek a negotiated settlement with Russia rather than focusing on efforts to regain all the territories that Russia has taken over in the past decade. He was also one of the 15 Republican senators who voted against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which was approved in April.
According to some sources cited by CNN, Rubio has indicated his interest in joining Trump's Cabinet if deemed suitable for the position. He has experience in handling foreign policy, sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the Foreign Relations Committee of the Department of State. The senator also has a close relationship with the new chief of staff, Susie Wiles.
After failing in the preliminary presidential election of the Republican Party in 2016, Rubio rebuilt his image as a populist in Washington. At the same time, he sharpened his credibility on foreign policy as a leader of the Republican Party in the Senate Intelligence Committee, while building relationships within his party, among other parties, and around the world.
Rubio is known to be tough on China. He has used his position as a senior Republican official on the Senate Intelligence Committee to confront China.
Rubio was once sanctioned along with five other U.S. lawmakers by the Chinese government in 2020 for their bad behavior regarding issues related to Hong Kong. Now, current U.S. officials and former U.S. officials say that China may need to lift those sanctions to confront him. "Rubio is worse for China than (Mike) Pompeo," said a former Trump administration official.
