TEMPO.CO, Solo - The elimination of the school zoning system in Indonesia for the new student admissions (PPDB) at schools still faces pros and cons. The Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu'ti, stated that the decision on whether to eliminate the zoning system could not be made unilaterally.
This was conveyed by Abdul Mu'ti when he was met in Solo City, Central Java, on Sunday, December 8, 2024, after attending the Tabligh Akbar at RS PKU Muhammadiyah Solo. "Regarding the zoning, it is still under review and in accordance with the results of our meeting with Mr. President (President Prabowo Subianto), the decision on the zoning will be made in a cabinet meeting, so it will not be decided by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education alone," said Abdul Mu'ti to the press.
As of now, he said there has been no latest directive from President Prabowo regarding the zoning system. However, according to him, in the cabinet meeting for discussing the topic, it will involve the ministries and other related parties. "It will be decided together with other ministries in the cabinet meeting," he said.
Regarding whether the new academic year 2024-2025 will use the old system, Abdul Mu'ti emphasized that they will wait for the decision in the cabinet meeting. "We have not, still waiting for the decision from the upcoming cabinet meeting because we have not received any directive from the President on when the cabinet meeting will discuss zoning," he said.
The elimination of the zoning system for PPDB at schools was previously proposed by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Gibran's request was also conveyed to Mendikdasmen during the coordination meeting on the evaluation of education policies for elementary and secondary levels on Monday, November 11, 2024.
Gibran had previously asked all heads of education offices throughout Indonesia to re-evaluate the zoning system. Gibran considered that the PPDB zoning actually had a good purpose. However, he felt that not all areas were suitable for that system.
