TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Environment has issued warnings to 306 regional heads regarding violations in waste management. The Director of Waste Management at the Ministry of Environment, Novrizal Tahar, stated that hundreds of regional heads are still implementing the open dumping system in waste management at final disposal sites (TPA). This practice has been prohibited by Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management.
"We urge them to immediately improve the management of landfills," said Novrizal when contacted by Tempo on Wednesday, November 12, 2024.
Currently, Novrizal stated that 54.44 percent of landfills in Indonesia are still operating with open dumping systems. He mentioned that this system has the potential to pollute the soil, air, and water sources around it.
The scheme of open dumping often causes unpleasant odors and health risks for residents around. Novrizal added that any regional government that fails to fulfill obligations regarding waste management will face sanctions in accordance with applicable regulations.
"We hope that regional governments will promptly respond by developing concrete programs for waste management improvements, especially in landfills," said Novrizal.
He also mentioned that the Ministry of Environment has identified 60 points of landfills operating illegally. These unauthorized waste disposal sites are located in the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) areas.
Prior to this, investigators from the General Directorate of Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Environment had also designated a man with the initial J (58 years old) residing in the Limo District, Depok City, as a suspect in illegal waste management. The authorities detained the suspect at the Class I Penitentiary in Central Jakarta.
This determination followed the sealing and cessation of illegal landfills in the Limo District, Depok City, by the Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurrofiq, on November 4. The location managed by the suspect J since 2022 is situated on land owned by PT Megapolitan Developments, covering approximately 3.75 hectares. The handling of this case originated from complaints from the public regarding landfills that pollute the environment, especially due to open burning systems, and landslides at the location.
