TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Regional Disaster Management Agency of Jakarta (BPBD DKI) recorded that five Neighborhood Associations (RT) in North Jakarta experienced tidal flood on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
The Head of BPBD DKI Jakarta, Isnawa Adji, said that floods occurred in three RT areas in Pluit Sub-District and two RT areas in Penjaringan Sub-District. This tidal flood had a height of up to 60 centimeters.
"The water level ranges from 20 to 60 centimeters, caused by floods," said Isnawa in his written statement on November 16, 2024.
Due to the high tide on the morning of November 16, 2024, the Pasar Ikan Water Gate raised the water level status to dangerous or alert level 1 since 10:00 AM. The tidal floods incident in North Jakarta has several facts as follows:
Warned about Tidal Floods
Information about tidal flood had been warned based on the observations of the Class I Maritime Meteorology Station of Tanjung Priok that would occur from November 14 to 21, 2024. Residents in several sub-districts in North Jakarta were advised to anticipate the impacts of tidal floods.
"The northern coastal areas of Jakarta such as in Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, Kalibaru, and Muara Angke, were advised to anticipate the impacts of the maximum high tide of the sea that potentially leads to coastal floods," said Isnawa, on November 15, 2024.
Causes of North Jakarta Tidal Floods
According to Isnawa, tidal floods in North Jakarta occurred due to the influence of the maximum high tide of the sea combined with the new moon phase. This incident potentially increased the height of the maximum high tide in the form of rob floods on the northern coast of Jakarta.
"Due to the phenomenon of maximum high tide of the sea, combined with the phenomenon of supermoon that potentially increases the height of the maximum high tide in the form of coastal or tidal floods in the northern coastal areas of Jakarta," Isnawa stated on Friday, November 15, 2024.
North Jakarta Tidal Floods Declining
BPBD DKI Jakarta conveyed that the tidal flood in several spots in North Jakarta had decreased on November 16, 2024, noon.
"We noted that the puddles had decreased from five neighborhood associations (RT) to three RT," said Isnawa.
According to Isnawa, tidal floods were still occurring in three RT in Pluit Sub-District, Penjaringan District, North Jakarta. Meanwhile, areas that had receded on Saturday afternoon were two RT in Marunda Sub-District, Cilincing District. In addition, water puddles on RE Martadinata Street in front of the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), Papanggo Sub-District, Tanjung Priok District, North Jakarta had also begun to recede.
The Handling
Isnawa stated that personnel were still deployed to monitor the conditions of the puddles in each area and to coordinate with the elements of the SDA Agency, Public Works Agency, and Fire Handling Agency. This supervision was done by draining the flood and ensuring that the water drains function properly along with the local neighborhood heads and sub-district heads.
"The tidal floods are targeted to recede quickly," said Isnawa, as reported by Antara.
